  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Feb 18, 2021

One hundred years ago today my father was born in a farm house a couple miles or so north of Abdal, Nebraska. He was his parents fourth and last child. I don’t remember Dad or his parents talking about the circumstances surrounding his birth. But they did talk about the day they found their baby boy drinking kerosene. Grandmother was on a ladder painting the farmhouse porch when she looked down to see her youngest trying to drink the kerosene she planned to clean her brush with. The doctor was summoned from Nelson, My grandparents told a v...

  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Feb 18, 2021

The cold, freezing and snowy weather we have been enduring made me think of the winter days at Oak Creek Country School where my sister and I attended years ago. Some of the students in today's schools would not understand what it was like to attend school during the winter months in that little one room schoolhouse. No, we didn't have to walk three miles to and from school each day as some had to in years before. We were blessed to have a little Jeep bus that picked us up at our homes and...

    Allen Ostdiek|Feb 18, 2021

I suspect that most of you have heard the old phrase: "When Hell Freezes Over." Well folks, I think in this February of 2021 . . . we've gotten there. Yes folks, there is a "Hell" on this earth. The town is in Michigan, west of Detroit. Although this is not a recent picture . . . you get the idea. I've mentioned before that the Little Blue River just north of Pauline never seems to freeze in winter, and it is not freezing this year. However, for the first time in my life, this year that little p...

  • My crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Feb 18, 2021

Word travels fast in a small community, so it’s likely not news to many of you that my husband and I had COVID. The hubby tested positive on Feb. 2, and me on the 5th. The teenager’s test came back negative. He has been isolated in his room. We all had to wear masks when he was out in the house’s common areas. I think it may have been better had he tested positive because now he will have to quarantine longer, seeing how he has been exposed. My symptoms were what I could only describe as severe hay fever and exhaustion. I’m not running a fever...

  • Southern power Shortage causes rolling Blackouts in this area

    Feb 18, 2021

When the natural gas pipeline reached Superior in the 1920s, the natural gas supplier offered large users a better rate if they would agree to an interruptible contract. Potentially large users like the cement plant and creameries could buy gas for less if they agreed to use other energy sources when supplies were tight. For the cement plant, the alternative energy supply was coal. Before the plant closed, the cement company had teamed with Hastings Utilities to buy coal by the unit train. Before it closed, Mid-America Dairymen was using...

  • Baby it's Cold Outside

    Teraesa Bruce|Feb 18, 2021

Here in south-central Nebraska, we are no strangers to miserably cold winters and dry, cracked skin, but this winter is setting records for just how cold it can get. Right now, it's -23º, give or take, here in Nelson and 23º in Juno, Alaska. I've always said I would never live in Alaska but the last week has me rethinking that decision. The National Weather Service in Hastings has recorded record-breaking temperatures in the last week. On February 15, a new record low of -24º was recorded. Th...

  • Jewell County History continues celebrating 150 Years

    Gloria Schlaefli|Feb 18, 2021

Jewell County was established in the late summer of 1870. Its first election was held in September. The county was growing as more settlers arrived. Soddies and dugouts were built to house the settlers and their families. Getting the living quarters built happened quickly so farm and ranch work could begin. One can imagine the scene in the Kansas song, “Home, home on the range where the deer and antelope play. Where seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day.” Yet, those early settlers had to face a lot of cha...
