Local efforts to improve internet service in Nuckolls County have again been stymied. The plan developed by South Central Public Power, Glenwood Telecommunications and the Nebraska Public Power District was supported locally but did not find the needed state level support for immediate implementation. The plan however, has not been abandoned. Supporters are continuing to look for a way to move it to completion. An application formulated by South Central and Glenwood was one of 76 applications submitted to the Nebraska Broadband Bridge Program....
Notice is given in this week’s newspaper that rehearsals for an Easter cantata will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, in the sanctuary of Superior First United Methodist Church. The Superior Area Community Chorus will perform Once Upon a Morning, a cantata written by Pepper Choplin, on Palm Sunday which this year will be April 10. Though this winter has included several days suitable for golfing, members of the Superior Country Club have been notified the course is closed until further notice. A combination of the continuing drought and players’ traffic is putting the course in jeopardy. Until conditions change golfers will not be permitted to walk or drive golf carts on the course. The club house will remain open on Wednesdays and Fridays and provide players a place where they can gather and talk about golf even if they aren’t allowed on the course. The 2022 tournament...

The Nuckolls County Board of commissioners met at the county courthouse in Nelson Monday. All three commissioners were present. The previously scheduled meeting for Jan. 17 was cancelled because of a lack of a quorum. Routine business was the order of the day. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating after a Jewell County sheriff's deputy was found deceased inside his home in Mankato. The Jewell County sheriff's office requested KBI assistance on Monday, Feb. 7, at approximately 2:40 a.m. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded overnight to investigate. Wanda Frasier, Downs Postmaster celebrated 30 years with the United State Postal Service on Jan. 25. Frasier was hired as a Postmaster Relief (PMR) Jan. 25, 1992, at Burr Oak, where she resides. She served in that non-career capacity until 2003. While serving as a PMR, Frasier was a featured writer for the National League of Postmasters, contributing articles in her personal column "The PMR Point of View" from 1998 to 2003. Trent Duskie, a fourth grade teacher at Rock Hills Elementary School, has lived in Jewell County all of his life. He currently lives by Ionia. The Rock Hills High School Scholar Bowl Team competed at the regional tournament, Thursday. The meet was held at Blue-Valley Randolph. There were 13 teams competing in the tournament. The team of Jacob Underwood, Davin Coil, Hannah Simmelink, Arielle Jacobs, Allison Ost and Aaron Underwood competed for Rock Hills. Throughout the year Robyn Menke (elementary cook) and Janie Corman (middle-high school cook), provide meals with locally raised beef two days a week for the students. The L-N Beef at School committee alternates between the elementary and middle-high school every month to educate students about beef and grill hamburgers for the students.
