For all those hunting for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift, there is less than a week to accomplish this task. What once began years and years ago as a simple, thoughtful card gifting, expressing one’s love and thoughts for others, has gotten blown out of proportion. Valentine gifts today are sometimes diamond jewelry, heart-shaped containers filled with chocolate candy or a dozen red roses. Remembering my the childhood years attending classes in a one-room schoolhouse, Valentine’s Day preparation began at least two weeks before. Classes made...
I was raised in a home that valued newspapers. When I was a pre-schooler, my parents and grandparents began reading newspaper stories to me. I’ll admit I was mainly interested in the pictures and the cartoons but that interest helped to earn me regular sessions with the adults in my world and their newspapers. Living less than a half mile from the Nuckolls and Jewell county line, my parents subscribed to both The Superior Express and the Jewell County Record as they wanted to keep up on the happenings in both counties. I skipped many of the c...
While I don’t know how often, or with how much interest, you keep track of the various legislative bodies that affect your life, I try to keep up ‘somewhat.’ I mean our Democratic Republic demands a lot. We have the federal, the state, the county, the city or village, the local school board; in Nebraska, the NRD and/or electric boards, the state education board or community college making decisions all the time that affect what and how we live our lives. In Nebraska it seems that, in general, we elect people to these positions and trust they wi...
This time of year, and since I no longer have children in school, I hear from my friends less than I would like to. I received a text yesterday, “Are you alive?” The text was followed by a call, “Hey lady, how have you been? Sorry, it’s been a minute since we have talked.” We had a nice long conversation. She is always busy this time of year with work, life and the different activities her children are involved in; the most prominent at the moment are basketball and wrestling. She asked how I had been doing, and I’m not sure how I replied, bu...

As many readers of this newspaper know, I like writing feature stories, especially feel good stories. I really like to write about couples and share their beautiful stories. For the past couple years, I've asked several couples if they would be interested in sharing their story with readers of The Superior Express. The answers have been "no" for various reasons. Good reasons, but that doesn't help me share a good story. I've frequently been told I should tell my story. With some hesitation,...

Q: I heard that the Virgin Birth was invented by the Church 300 years after Christ lived. Is that true? A: The Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ is a cardinal doctrine of the Church and has been from it’s beginning. It is clearly taught in Scripture (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-37), which was written in the 1st century A.D. within a few decades of Christ’s ascension. There is a great deal of extra-biblical evidence to support this, which has persuaded many skeptics down through the years to embrace Christ as Lord and Savior. Yet we still hear of man...
