  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|Nov 9, 2023

Our Kansas subscribers had an opportunity to go to the polls Tuesday and select those who will serve on school boards and city councils. This is an off-year in Nebraska and the polls were closed. That wasn’t the case in Nuckolls County in 1903. Had we gone back in time 120 years ago this week, we would have had an opportunity to select those who were to fill various county offices. From the stories printed in the 1903 papers, it appears it was a spirited election with many folks seeking a county job. In the days preceding the election, well a...

  • Country Roads

    Gloria Schlaefli|Nov 9, 2023

The country roadways in most areas locally have become bumpy and are now rough for traveling. A driver has to watch out for pot holes filled with nothing but rock dust along the roads. I’ve been told, the rock road conditions were brought on by a really dry year, and recently from harvest trucks hauling grain into the elevators. It is hoped the road conditions will improve. Regardless of the native rock country roadway conditions, my husband and I decided to take a route homeward from Superior that I hadn’t traveled for some time. It brought ba...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    Nov 9, 2023

    Q. If the Bible says that those who kill should be put to death (Genesis 9:5-6), wouldn’t that mean that those who put them to death would have to be killed themselves? A: Well now, that would cause quite a problematic chain-reaction, wouldn’t it? While there is plenty of room for sanctified common-sense in understanding Scripture, it is also okay to examine its moral teachings more closely on occasion. When we do, we discover that the moral code of the Bible does in fact rest upon a rational basis, and teaches just and consistent ethics for...

  • Love My Crazy Life

    Teraesa Bruce|Nov 9, 2023

I need to rant just a bit. I was reading Senator Ricketts weekly column and it brought up a lot of irritation I have with our government. Where in the world do we get all this money we spend on foreign aid? I thought we were broke and in the hole for a whole ton of dough! Where is that money coming from? Are we borrowing it just to send it overseas? If so, I think that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I better stop there or I might get myself into trouble. George is always telling me I’m too conservative to be a Democrat, I keep m...

  • LFFCʼs Harvest Festival popular way to annually conclude October

    Nov 9, 2023

It was approximately 25 degrees outside last Tuesday night (Haloween), so it was good to be in out of the cold. It was warm indoors at the Superior Auditorium for the Fall Harvest Festival sponsored by Living Faith Fellowship Church. Even though is was below freezing outside, Special Scoops ice cream was a big hit indoors as some people asked for two scoops, not just one. All time favorites of hot dogs, provided by Ideal Market, and 20 pounds of Sloppy Joe meat was cooked up by Sharon Crowl...

  • Internet speeds newspaper delivery

    Nov 9, 2023

This newspaper is regularly receiving calls and emails from subscribers who are unhappy because of postal delays. For example on Monday we received an email from a Lincoln subscriber complaining because she had not yet received her Nov. 2 paper. Not so many years ago we could count on papers being delivered to Lincoln on Thursday and Kansas City on Friday, but that is no longer the case. Here at the newspaper office, we did not receive our copy of the Nov. 2, Hebron paper until Monday. The Red Cloud paper no longer arrives on Thursday. It is...

  • The Torch-Red Model T

    Randy Neilsen|Nov 9, 2023

In January of this year, Paul Hutchinson, known for his jaw-dropping, custom automobiles, finished restoring his 1927 Model T. This torch-red classic has a custom frame and a Chevy 350 engine. The canvas roof panel was replaced by a ridged panel out of a 1958 Ford station wagon. Originally the gasoline tank sat between the passengers and the engine. Paul designed a new tank out of irrigation pipe that sits in the rear of the vehicle and a special, modern-style fuel door sits discreetly behind...

  • Upland hunters see variable success in opener

    Jerry Kane|Nov 9, 2023

Nebraska’s 2023 pheasant and quail season opener Oct. 28 greeted hunters with a front of cold winter weather and variable success. Based on field reports from Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff and law enforcement, pheasant hunters found better success in parts of northeast, central and south-central Nebraska. Many hunters also found good numbers of quail, especially throughout their core range in south-central and southeastern Nebraska. Success during the opener was more limited in Nebraska’s traditional pheasant strongholds. The sou...

  • Commissioners get first glimpse of attitude survey

    Nov 9, 2023

As part of a comprehensive plan for Nuckolls County being developed by a consulting firm based in Kearney, county residents were asked to complete a survey in the summer of 2023. A report based on that survey was delivered to the county commissioners on Monday. Some of the highlights follow. Just less than half of the respondents have lived in the county for less than a decade and close to one-third have lived in the county for more than 40 years. Several age groups were represented by those who responded and the respondents appeared to be...

  • Veterans Day once Armistice Day is Saturday, Nov. 11

    Kerma Crouse|Nov 9, 2023

Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day all have to do with honoring our military service personnel but they are not at all the same. The days celebrate those “who died wearing the uniform,” those “who are currently wearing the uniform” and those “who have worn the uniform.” Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday in May, is a federal holiday in the United States. It honors those service personnel who died in the service of their country. They died “wearing the uniform.” The observance began as “Decoration Day” after the Civil War...

The Kansas Department of Transportation is committed to keeping the highways clear whenever inclement weather impacts the state. However, KDOT staffing shortages create the potential for highways to not be cleared of snow and ice in a timely manner. The agency is in need of equipment operators – the agency’s primary snowplow operators. The agency has dealt with reduced staffing in the past, but the shortages have been greater in recent years. Across the state, KDOT is about 25 percent short of its preferred number of snowplow operators nee...
