    While looking through the back issues of this newspaper, I discovered a story about an attempted Nuckolls County jail break that I should have shared with the our readers when we printed stories about the razing of the Nuckolls County Jail. I did share part of the story. Back in the summer of 1972, a woman staying in the Superior motel was suspected of passing a forged check at a Superior business.   • Superior's October sales up 19.3%

    This week many Nebraska business firms will be filing their December sales tax reports as the last day to do so without penalty is Friday. And the Nebraska Department of Revenue has released a statewide report of sales for the month of October. October appears to have been a good month for many Nuckolls County businesses. When compared to the previous year, sales were up 12.1 percent from $3.24 million to more than $3.63 million. They were even better for Superior based businesses.   • Auditorium rededication at 4 Friday afternoon

    On Jan. 29, 1937, the Superior Auditorium was used for the first time. The occasion was a 55th birthday party honoring President Franklin Roosevelt with the proceeds going to fight infantile paralysis. Though it was an icy, miserable winter night, 544 people attended the party.     For students attending the Superior Public Schools, classes had a fiery start last Wednesday morning. As the students arrived for the start of the school day, one of the students had the misfortune to have his ride catch on fire. The driver, Ja'Coby Beck, stopped his vehicle on Eighth Street near the entrance to the American Legion Hall parking lot.     Wendy Helfrich was visiting New York when she received a text message at 2 a.m. on Dec. 27, reporting her family’s flight home to Hebron on Southwest Airlines had been canceled.     For the first time since 1969 there is not a member of the Thornberry family serving the residents of Nuckolls County at the county courthouse. Doris Thornberry began working in the county clerk’s office in 1969. With the retirement of her daughter, Vicki Thornberry Ensign, the family presence at the courthouse ended. Vicki was raised on a farm north of Nelson. She is a Nelson High School graduate. After graduation, she worked at the Nelson elevator and the Nelson Good Samaritan Home.     Tami Sharp was installed as the Nuckolls County treasurer on Jan. 5, 2023. She succeeded Vicki Ensign who opted not to run for reelection after 40 years of service in that office. Sharp graduated from Lucas-Luray High School. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for one year. She has been married to Lance Sharp for 27 years. They have two children: a daughter, Gabriel, who resides in Fairbury, and a son, Jacob, who is attending Hastings College.     The Nuckolls County Board of Commissioners met at the county courthouse in Nelson Tuesday. The meeting was held Tuesday because of the Monday holiday. The board attended to routine business approving claims. Susan Rogers, county assessor, and Royce Gonzales, district court clerk, were appointed as the Nuckolls County 2023 budget authority.     Tragedy struck Jewell County about 7:35 Friday morning when the driver of a Rock Hills School vehicle transporting students lost control of her vehicle. The accident happened on the Randall Road about one mile south of Highway 36.     The lack of consistency continues to hold back the Superior High School boys basketball team. The Wildcats hosted the Heartland Huskies at the Superior gymnasium last Tuesday.
