  • Puffs

    Allen Ostdiek|Jan 18, 2023

Folks . . . you just have to keep a ‘Sense of Humor.” I’ve encouraged this ‘virtue’ for many years. You never know when you need it. Last week, for example, in some news story, someplace, I read the phrase: “Think Tank for President Biden.” I think it was in a story about the ‘discovery’ of classified documents in our president’s former office and home. Gosh, that struck me as funny and my first reply was that this president need much more than a “Think Tank.” Consider the fact that most everything he says is written out for him on cards (o...

  • Ryan Kile wins Dick's Place Contest

    Jan 18, 2023

Games of skill and games of chance permeate American society for many years, and the 2022-23 college football bowl games have been involved in many ways. Dick’s Place in Lawrence has sponsored a contest for many a year and for this year, the winner was Mr. Ryan Kile of Lawrence. His entry beat out 300 similar entries. But it wasn’t easy. Mr. Kile and one other man from Deshler both missed only six games in the contest, but Ryan’s skill with the ‘tie-breaker’ entry won him the first place finish....

  • Remembering . . . The Pledge, thinking forward

    Jan 18, 2023

$523,175.91 . . . That figure is proudly displayed on the Community Information sign on Main Street in Lawrence. The figure is impressive in one way, and disappointing in other ways. Impressive in the fact that it represents the cash on hand the Lawrence Community Building Committee has raised since the community committed to replacing the American Legion Hall with a newer, larger, facility. Impressive in the fact that the money has been accumulated with only one "large" donation (a $150,000...

The regular monthly meeting of the Nelson American Legion Family was held on Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Legion meeting room. The group was saddened by the sudden death of long-time club manager, Jim Menke. Jim was the driving force in obtaining the buildings that house both the clubhouse and the meeting room and was a storehouse of knowledge about the unit’s history. Plans for the ongoing operation of the clubhouse were brought forth and several members volunteered to assist. Bill Riley agreed to oversee day to day operations on an interim b...

  • Blood Drive falls short of goal

Another disappointing blood drive! Nelson had a full schedule filled with 62 donors, and then the blood mobile arrived last Monday morning, short-staffed again! It’’s disappointing to have to cancel so many donors and even send some home after they made the trip to town. Local sponsors said they could have easily exceeded our goal, but were pleased to collect 42 units. • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|Jan 18, 2023

Jacob made it safely to Texas and was surprisingly on time. He said he has been doing brain-numbing tasks and lots of PT while waiting for classes to start. Robert made it out to Pennsylvania and is headed back to the midwest as I type. I’m thankful it’s them and not me; I would be frustrated with all the “hurry up and wait” that goes on. Our kitty, Toothless, named after the character in the movie “How to Train your Dragon,” was upset when the boys left after the holiday. She walked around the house, yowling every night for the first week....
