The new year of 2025 has arrived, ready or not! Happy New Year! It will take me about two months before I become used to writing 2025 on my checks and other official papers. This year, looking forward to the new year’s arrival, wasn’t at all like it was in my youth. Then it seemed the days could not fly by fast enough. I could not wait until another birthday would arrive and I would be close to becoming a teenager, getting a driver’s license and graduation from high school. When I became engaged and the wedding date was set for the comin...
Q: Why would God let this pandemic kill so many people? A: This is an important question and one that I want to handle with particular care and sensitivity. Probably the best way to do so is to encourage those seeking the answer to this question to read the story of the sickness and death of Lazarus in the Gospel of John, Chapter 11. Jesus Christ was God Himself, living on the earth as a human being. The way he responded to the death of his good friend Lazarus shows us several important things about God’s character. I will present the main p...
With this issue, The Express begins Volume 126, That means The Superior Express has been published for 125 years and always under the name of The Superior Express. C. E. Dedrick published the first issue in January of 1900, approximately 25 years after the town was established. Depending upon how one counts time, The Express could be even older. When it was established, Mr. Dedrick took over the subscription list of the Superior Sun, a paper that had been established perhaps 10 years earlier and edited by Charles Bishop. The earliest copies of...
I know a lot of people think the ‘Christmas” season is over already, but it is not. The following little phrase come from Pope Benedict 16, a well-educated and holy man. I hope it carries a message to you as you reflect on the few words that carry a strong message. “From the moment of his birth, He belongs outside the realm of what is important and powerful in worldly terms. Yet it is this unimportant and powerless child that proves to be the truly powerful one, the one on whom ultimately everything depends.” A O Dear Santa: I know this le...
During most of my years living in Pennsylvania, there was snow on Christmas. However, the year I was 14 there had been no snow by the holiday season. That year the temperature as 68 degrees on Christmas Day in Philadelphia. When you are accustomed to a white Christmas, it is a little difficult to get into the holiday mood without snow. That year, even the customary flannel Christmas pajamas felt out of place. The only normal thing that year was the tree in the living room with sparkling lights and presents piled high. In the back corner was a v...
Frequently, almost unanswerable questions are received at The Express office. In recent days we have been asked for stories related to the a man who passed through Superior riding a “bull” coast to coast. The person making the inquiry said he remembered walking with the man to the east edge of Superior. No doubt someone rode and animal through Superior but we doubt it was a bull. Most likely he was riding a steer. Few bulls are of the temperament to make for good cross-country steeds. Another person said he remember someone riding a “bull” who...
The May 7, 1959, issue of The Superior Express reported a contrast of times. Two nearly new boats collided and were demolished on Lovewell Lake, the Webber community was hit by a tornado, soaking rains since Saturday afternoon had measured 5.36 inches and a wagon train had crossed Nuckolls County that week. The wagon train story follows: (see related discussion of this event in the Editor’s Notebook). Eighteen days on trail, a half-dozen Indian raids and no casualties so far for the Oregon-bound caravan of the Oregon Centennial wagon train. The...
The C. E. Adams home constructed in Superior in 1886 was probably an attention getter when new and it was again this year when the current occupant, Austin Karnatz bathed it in Christmas lights. The Superior Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors named Bob and Lavonda Sloan's yard at 415 Colorado as the December Yard of the Month. Their yard has consistantly been interestingly decorated for Christmas for many years. Above is a portion of the decorations displayed this year. The Superior Chamber of...

Did you ever wonder why in the United States, we keep to the right but in some other countries keeping to the left is the norm? The Lawrence Locomotive newspaper offered this explanation on Dec. 24, 1904, which was reprinted from the Chicago Tribune. So read the following story and you can answer the question. On a bridge in the city of Victoria, B.C., announced a gentleman driver, who had handled the reins in the good old days when Commodore Vanderbilt and his speedy roadsters were familiar figures upon the smooth pikes of southern New York,...

Other than the greatest story ever told (the Christmas Story) last week’s second greatest story was the L-N girls’ basketball team trip to western Nebraska to play Hi-Line (Eustis) High School. The Class D-2 Lady Raiders took on another of the 18 or 19 teams in a higher class. And . . . they came home with a win. A 49-41 victory. The game was, without a doubt, the most interesting contest of the young season to date. Looking at the box score was the most puzzling view in the statistics.
