    Because of the Coronavirus, Mankato Patriots were not held hostage. The city employees of Mankato displayed the Stars and stripes on Commercial Street. The women of the VFW Auxiliary Post 7830 and the Jewell County 4-H Club placed smaller flags at the grave sites of our heroes at the Mount Hope Cemetery and Catholic Cemetery. Gerald McAtee,Todd Meurhan and Lyndell Hanson honored all heroes with the commitment of displaying flags at Mount Hope Cemetery and the Catholic Cemetery....

  • Windmills still used

    On a trip to Burr Oak, I noticed a windmill. The fan was not turning on a windy day. I stopped and walked into the field to see why it wasn't turning. As near as I could tell, the brake was set so the fan could not turn to pump the water for the cattle. It didn't look like the cattle had been in that pen for a while because the weeds and grass were not trampled down.   • An enjoyable trip to Glen Elder

    I made a road trip to Glen Elder last Thursday to meet with Mike Louthan to purchase a used chain hoist. The road trip began at Mount Hope Cemetery heading south on 150 Road . On my journey. I decided to take a slight detour at J Road heading west just to see the Jewell State Fishing Lake. The water level is about the same as last November.     Rolling Hills Electric Co-op held a safety meeting at the Mankato firehouse Thursday. Displays were presented on different situations such as what could happen if people came into contact with overhead power lines. Present was Mark Martin, the narrator, Adam Badger and Todd Eitzmann, as demonstrators.   • Kemmerer and Pumphrey open truck wash

    A new business, K and P Truck Wash, opened north of Jewell on Jan. 31. Joel Kemmerer and Andrew Pumphrey are the owners. Four washing stations are available. Water for the truck wash is supplied by a private well but water can also be provided by the rural water district. All the water and waste which runs into a nearby lagoon will be pumped out and spread on nearby fields for fertilizer. The owners plan to build a shelter and office building with a drivers' lounge.     If a new community is built and people are to be reached, then a congregation must be established. On Dec. 14, 1872, at the courthouse located in Jewell Center, Kansas, (now Mankato) a meeting was called to establish a congregation. Eleven voting members were present. John J.
