  • SMART New Year's Resolutions maybe keepers and helpful

    Kerma Crouse|Dec 30, 2021

Ever made a New Year’s Resolution? Ever kept one past January 31? If you have, celebrate! Many resolutions don’t make it that long and many more aren’t the permanent change the resolvers sought. How can we make a resolution and keep it? One way is to make a SMART resolution. SMART goals, objectives, plans or resolutions have been around since the acronym originated in a 1981 Management Review publication. In the acronym SMART, the S stands for Specific. A resolution needs to be specific not vague. “Lose weight” is not specific but “I will l...

  • 80th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor

    Kerma Crouse|Dec 9, 2021

December 7, 1941, was a long time ago – 80 years to be exact. Hopefully President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's words still ring true. "Yesterday, December 7, 1941-a date which will live in infamy-the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." The attack and the President's speech rallied a previously neutral country. War against the Empire of Japan was declared, Dec. 8, 1941, the day he made his oft quoted speech. On D...

  • Odessa named after large Ukrainian port city

    Kerma Crouse|Nov 4, 2021

The Odessa Post Office, the "flourishing" community of Odessa, Odessa Township, Odessa School District No. 130, the Odessa Cemetery and the Odessa Methodist Episcopal Church were all named after Odessa, Russia, the large Ukrainian port city on the Black Sea. That Odessa still exists. The Jewell County namesakes are not so fortunate. Today the township and the fading and forlorn church building with the cemetery on K Road are all that remain. Where exactly was the Odessa Post Office and the...

  • Athens Rural High School - District No. 164

    Kerma Crouse|Oct 28, 2021

Athens Rural High School was truly one-of-a-kind. No town, just a township seeking to have a high school for their students. It was organized by the citizens of Athens Township, independent of any other district and was not connected with any other township. There was no town of Athens at the time the school was organized. There had been a community developed around the Athens Post Office in the late 1800s but that did not last. The post office was discontinued Aug. 31, 1901. The township,...

Increased lighting will allow increased use of the area and will be appreciated by area residents and visitors. This grant of $7,131, was awarded during the...

  • Goose waddles home, survives Five Wild Cousins Join Tame Pair

    Kerma Crouse|Sep 9, 2021

Before last winter's bitter spell, a flock of tame geese lived on and around Lake Emerson. They had been there since last summer when the lake was drained for dredging. They stayed during the dredging. Tame geese can't fly. But when it got cold, really cold, the entire lake froze over. Some of the flock did not survive the elements and the predators. However, there was one gray goose that started for home. As a goose waddles, it was about a half mile. Home was Dale Willmeth's back yard in...

Next to the "old" concrete grain silos is a new, 72 foot in diameter, 120 foot tall, silo. This new addition to the Jewell elevator location will hold 400,000 bushels. The first bushels will not be wheat from the soon to be harvested fields. The structure is complete but the machinery infrastructure is still being...

The Civil War cost the United States more lives, some 625,000, than nearly all other wars combined. Just a couple o...
