Last week was full of appointments, On Tuesday I took Mom to the dentist, on Wednesday I took myself to the doctor, and on Friday George had appointments at the VA. On the way to the dentist on Tuesday, I got to know the little car better. It’s not a fast car, that’s for sure! The top speed is 65 MPH. I could go faster but the motor might blow up. LOL! It has an awesome stereo system if you are a teenager. I was sitting in the car, waiting for Mom listening to the radio with the key on. and decided to turn the base down. I got it perfect but...
I’m having trouble with words today. If I was speaking out loud, I would sound like a bumbling idiot. Words are hard! LOL! The good news is I got a car. We got something with four wheels that goes zoom. It wouldn’t have been something I would have chosen if any other choices were available, but the little thing is growing on me. It’s a Chevy Spark, and it just happened to check all the boxes of necessity. It’s bright red and you can’t miss me in it. It’s a funny-looking little car. Besides the car, nothing is new in my life. I spend my da...
This week’s commissioners’ meeting was anything but business as usual as the commissioners held a public forum to discuss the possibility of a new courthouse with their constituents. Around 20 individuals attended the meeting, all having many questions about the conditions in the current courthouse. The big question of the day was can the current courthouse be renovated? Many would like to see the building renovated, but with mold seeping into the main floors of the building, bats in the belfry and electrical and heating-cooling issues, is it...
What a crummy week I’ve had. It all started last Wednesday after picking up my deliveries. A mile and a half south of Nelson, my car broke down. Our family car has never given us any problems, never even a check engine light, so it was a big surprise when it started acting funny and the oil light came on. I pulled her over, popped the hood and checked the oil. Sure enough, the oil had antifreeze in it. After a lot of back and forth, we decided it’s not worth it for us to have it fixed, since it has such high mileage. We figure if we have the...
Now that it’s warmed up just a bit, Duke is enjoying the snow. I’m surprised he doesn’t have tunnels burrowed in the backyard, as sometimes all I see of him is his rear end sticking up out of the snow drifts. Unfortunately, he doesn’t stay still long enough for me to get a picture. I’m glad he is getting to enjoy it because he is a big boy, with lots of energy and I’m glad to be able to put him outside for some exercise. He was going crazy and taking me along with him from being cooped up in the house. My birthday week was cold but awesome, I...
Last Wednesday, while I was making my paper deliveries, I slipped and fell. Falling on ice is so weird, one second you are upright, walking, minding your own business, and the next you’re on the ground looking at the sky. I thought I had broken my finger, but after a visit to the doctor, turns out I just sprained it. I didn’t even know that was a thing, but believe me it has been reminding me just how real it is with every key typed. Other than the finger, I seemed to have gotten lucky. My bottom hurt for a little while but is fine. LOL! Goo...
We got a ton of the heavy, wet, fluffy, white stuff yesterday morning. I’m not sure how much though. I scooped about three inches off the sidewalk around 11 a.m., and a couple more filled in its place, so my best guess was about five inches. It’s the good stuff too, perfect for snow ball fights and black eyes! LOL! It snowed again last night and the wind blew, so who know what we got here in town. If I had to guess I’d say six inches, maybe 12 inches, I can’t tell, but it’s much appreciated moisture. I hate the cold and the snow but I know we...
Welcome 2024. Christmas at the Bruce house went well. Christmas Day George and I opened our gifts before going to Mom’s house. The gift George worked so diligently on was a keepsake box. He used a wood burner to engrave the inside bottom with the army and marine corps logos and says, “To the one who gives her all so that they can give their all.” I have to admit I cried a little when I opened it. I have already gathered up the boys letters from boot camp and placed them inside. Those are probably my greatest treasures, that is besides the b...
Mark it on your calendar, 120 days from Dec. 21, because we should get one heck of a storm. I had to drive to Lincoln and back in that fog on Thursday. The morning part of the drive wasn’t bad at all. I left around eight so I would be able to do a little last minute Christmas shopping before my appointment with the allergist. I was quite shocked with how tame the shopping mall was, it being just four days away from the holiday. Although it was getting pretty crowded by the time I left at noon. I hate shopping so close to a holiday, any h...
At what age did you realize you were becoming your grandmother? For me, it was 45. I own and use a shower cap, I have a handled brush in the shower to wash my back, I keep a back scratcher beside the bed, I have 20 pill bottles on the counter, I save jars, not just canning jars but all glass jars. I wash and reuse aluminum foil, freezer bags and have a tote full of cords that I have saved for just in case. George is turning into his father. He has been saving those plastic tubs that his peanut butter-filled pretzels come in to use for nuts and...
I have recently become aware of just how many of you read my ramblings! Thank you! Sorry if I worried anyone with my boo hooing. I really am all right, just frustrated with my body and brain. I am feeling better, the shakiness is starting to go away, and I’m feeling clear headed. Duke is growing like a weed. He is skinny again, he seems to grow the way my kids did. They would start to put on a little weight then shoot up like a bean pole. Duke is going to be a big boy. He is doing well with his training. We play fetch most everyday, and he l...

Duke found his voice! I’ve heard him bark, playfully, but he is not typically a vocal pup. My friend, Linda, popped in the other day. Like always, she walked on in. I knew she was there, I heard the door, but it caught Duke off guard. When he barked, I almost jumped out of my skin. He sounds scary! I guess that is what they mean by “his bark is worse than his bite.” I’m feeling a little better, and yes, I may have been feeling a little sorry for myself the past few weeks, but I’m allowed. Life is hard, and when one is not feeling well, it is a...
Oh my gosh! The last week has been rough! I told you I had depression and fibromyalgia. Well, I started treatment for depression a couple of weeks ago. It was great at first, I had so much energy, I was waking up in the morning feeling rested, and I was getting things done. It felt like I went from being Eeyore to Tigger overnight. It was awesome. Then I started waking up randomly at all hours of the early morning after only sleeping for a few hours, to not being able to go back to sleep. That made for some long days, but I did accomplish...
I need to rant just a bit. I was reading Senator Ricketts weekly column and it brought up a lot of irritation I have with our government. Where in the world do we get all this money we spend on foreign aid? I thought we were broke and in the hole for a whole ton of dough! Where is that money coming from? Are we borrowing it just to send it overseas? If so, I think that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I better stop there or I might get myself into trouble. George is always telling me I’m too conservative to be a Democrat, I keep m...
It’s been a fairly uneventful week, and I am thankful it was. This little visit from Old Man Winter has me feeling all crummy, achy, stiff and sore. I wish the Nebraska weather would just pick a season and stick with it for a while. A tropical vacation is sounding really good right now. I think I have just enough cash to make it somewhere warmer, although I would have to stay and live in a box on the beach because I wouldn’t have enough to make it back. I wonder? Could I make a box on the beach work? LOL! When it’s not wintertime cold, I love...
I woke up at five this morning. For most folks that’s a normal day, but for me, well let’s just say it doesn’t happen often. Duke had squeezed his way under our bed and was stuck, so I helped him get unstuck and took him out to potty. He did his business and I decided to go ahead and make coffee and get started with my day. Since I was up and at ’em, I took my morning meds, and then I took them again when my alarm went off at nine reminding me to take my meds. It was just after I choked them down that I realized what I had done. I don’t t...
By T Looking for things to do nearby this spooky season, I found a few and thoughts I would share. If you’re into haunted houses, but don’t want to travel to the big city, the Chester Community Club puts together a creepy, spooky and fun event. This year’s theme is Hollywood Horror, and you can visit this at the Chester Odditorium from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for a small fee. If Trunk or Treat is your thing, stop in Nelson, Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. The Nelson Legion and friends will be ready for trick or treaters followed by Family Mo...
Duke is doing well after staying the better part of last week with the vet. We took him, along with the “thick” credit card last Tuesday. He came home on Friday and is now the happy bouncy puppy I was hoping for. He chews or tries to chew on everything, including me and George. Bob our cat, loves taunting him from under the bed in the spare room because Duke knows he will follow him under the bed and get in trouble. LOL! He has only gotten stuck under there once, and I was laughing so hard I almost couldn’t get him unstuck. Although I now h...
When I think of Nelson, two landmarks come to mind, the mansion on the hill and the courthouse. Both of which are in need of some love. The courthouse stands tall on the hill, dwarfing everything around it. The 133-year-old building is a beautiful landmark, especially when all the flags have been placed in the yard. As beautiful as it is, none of us make it to that age without a few wrinkles, and a little wear and tear. It is the second oldest operating courthouse in the state with the least amount of upkeep. Unfortunately, our beloved building...
Man has it been a week. I finally decided to go ahead and find a puppy so I went looking to see what I could find nearby. Honestly, there wasn't much. I didn't want a little yappy dog, and I didn't want a big hairy dog, and I sure didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a dog. I had been tucking away a little money here and there cause I knew someday I would want another, but the price of pups has gone up quite a bit in the last 20 years. I tried the shelters a few months back, and they have a...
We hit yet another bump in the road, George had two toenails removed last week, and the doctor plans to remove them all two at a time. He has had problems with his toes since before I met him, they are very sensitive, and he has tried everything in the book to not have to remove the nails, but here we are. I hope this helps him in the long run, but at the moment he is having second thoughts about removing the other eight. When he went in to have them looked at, he didn’t think they would remove them right away, and since they did all of our p...
On the road again, but unlike Willie, we aren’t having much fun. Another trip to Omaha to see George’s doctor this time. Ever since his surgery, he has felt like he had a lump in his throat, so it was decided he needed to visit his surgeon again. They stuck the camera up his nose and looked down his throat and everything seems to be healing just fine, so it was decided to wait it out a bit and see if the problem corrects itself. We go back in December. We got over whatever ick we had. Fingers crossed that being sick for a week means we will sta...
What a wonderful weekend we had. George and I were both down with the flu. To be honest, I still feel pretty crummy. George wasn’t feeling well on Saturday and it hit him hard on Sunday, I wasn’t feeling at my best Saturday, but was hopeful I wouldn’t get anything too bad, but it caught up to me Sunday evening and the last two days have been miserable. Thankfully, Julia came and got the puppy yesterday. I was having enough trouble taking care of myself and was afraid I would lose her. Once I’m feeling better, I know I will be missing my shad...
I can’t remember much of last week, all I know was that Friday was a busy day. Jacob loaded up the truck and headed out for North Carolina. He had planned to drive straight through but thankfully stopped for the night about halfway. He arrived late Saturday evening and was moved into his new barracks by Sunday evening. He was reunited with two of his buddies, and they spent Labor Day on the beach. George spent Friday afternoon running after his boys. Both boys had the weekend off, so he went to get them for our regular visit. Nicky was hired t...
