So this week has not been the greatest, and I’m having trouble making light of it. I am happy to say Jacob is healing up nicely and back on the football field; I pray he stays that way. I am also grateful we are all healthy and have what we need to get by. As Grandma used to say, “This too shall pass.” That is one of two sayings that stuck with me. The other is the “Serenity Prayer.” Both of these have provided comfort to me during difficult times, but seriously, her pickle recipe would have been nice to have. LOL! I know we are not the only...
Cross country is a sport where teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. The course may include grass and dirt surfaces, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills and flat ground. It is both an individual and a team sport; runners are judged on individual times and teams by a points-scoring method. Cross country usually occurs in the fall and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures. The Red...
This past week has been busy. I’ve been burning the candle at both ends, and I am paying for it today. Jacob dislocated his shoulder during the JV football game on Monday. We took an unplanned trip to the sports doctor. After a week of rest, he is doing better with it, but we now have physical therapy appointments three times a week. For how long, well, we will find that out. Until then, fingers are crossed. I’ve had meetings to attend with my mom for various reasons. We’ve been collecting boxes. She has been working hard at sorting through her...
I am embracing the crazy, or at least trying to! My yards are a mess, but at least my house is clean, for now. We haven’t been home long enough to mess things up. Granted, I have been following everyone around and picking up in the wake of their destruction. That’s a chore that gets old, really fast, but reminding, yelling and cussing about it doesn’t get me anywhere. My mom, after much coaxing from my brother and me, decided to downsize and move. So I am dealing with the anxiety, not the actual act of yet...just mental preparation for organ...
What’s up with this weather? I got to say, though, the cool temps are a welcome change. Only because I know they won’t last too long, I brought in my flowers and what was in the garden last night, didn’t take long. I’ve kind of neglected to water the last couple of weeks, so there wasn’t much left. My mom has an iPhone now. Help us! We are all going crazy, trying to help her learn how to use it. She is doing pretty well with it, considering we haven’t had the time to go over it with her. She called me from it the other day and said it wasn’t w...
Football season is here! I forgot how tiring it is to chase the kid around to games! We have had one varsity game and one JV game so far this season, and I already have more than 1,500 football photos. I’m having issues getting them off the “cloud” to share them. Technology is fantastic when it cooperates. I’m sure its mostly operator error. I’ve been using this computer and operating system for almost a year now and am still unsure of myself. I am happy to say that most of my photos are better than last year. I’m hoping that’s because I’m f...
I locked my keys in my garage! House keys, garage keys, office keys, post office keys — all of them except the keys for the car I was driving. I haven’t found the spare garage key as of yet. I may be purchasing a bolt cutter soon. I was getting some hamburger out of the deep freeze and set it down because my hands were full. I shut the light out and locked the padlock. I got to the post office and couldn’t find the key. That is when it dawned on me. One of those Oh darn moments! I went back and looked in the window. Sure enough, my keys were...
I had a huge mom fail in the last couple of weeks. My youngest, Jacob, youngest of the second set of kids, is turning 16 in September. We went to do the driving permit thing, and the examiner told me he needed to have his learner’s permit or school permit for six months before getting his driver’s license. Also, a school permit is only good for three months after turning 16 years of age. I don’t remember reading that part when I was going over the rules and regulations. I may have skimmed right over it though as that stuff is such a pleas...
Since last week’s column was all gloom and doom, I’ll try to keep it upbeat this week. My oldest Robert, the oldest of the second set of kids that is, finally got his sign-on bonus for joining the army. Like any teenager with a dollar in his pocket, he just had to spend it right now. So at 4 a.m. I get a phone call; Mom, can you please find me a car, nothing fancy, just four wheels and a driver’s seat. If you have ever had the pleasure of talking to me in the early morning hours, you would know this was a bad idea. A few hours later I get a...
Have you ever been to the circus and seen a juggler at work? They usually begin with two or three items, all thrown into the air and caught one after another. After a while, they add another item to the fun. I have seen a juggler juggling probably 10 things at the same time, but when they tried to add that 11th item, all the balls fell at the juggler’s feet. That’s how I feel lately, I’m dropping the ball a lot. I’ve got too many irons in the fire, and I am on the verge of collapse. My husband keeps telling me just to let go of some of the thi...

It’s been a couple of weeks since you’ve heard from me. Not much has changed, I’m still running around like a chicken with my head cut off. This coronavirus has made life a bit more challenging for all of us. I am attempting to work from home. Most of my information now comes from live newscasts or Facebook. There isn’t a whole lot going on locally. I still go down and check-in on Patty every day while her daughter is working. Patty has some health issues that keep her from living on her own. She is independent, but it gives her family peace o...
The non-profit group from Superior, The Ambassadors of Kindness, are at it again. After a successful toy drive this past Christmas, they are currently collecting crayons, color pencils, Play-Doh, and coloring books for patients at the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and other local hospitals. The program is called “Color 4 Kids” and provides children who are restricted to their room with fun activities. If you would like to donate, bring new crayons, colored pencils, coloring books and Play-Doh to one of the drop off locations, Horiz...
Thursday at 8:56 a.m. the Nuckolls County Sheriff's office received two 911 calls reports for a house fire at 3119 Highway 4, just a few miles east of Lawrence. Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 8:59 a.m. At approximately 9:10 a.m., Nelson Fire was called out to assist and bring water. Thirteen volunteers from Lawrence and six from Nelson answered the call. Lawrence had the ambulance on the scene, along with every vehicle at their disposal. Nelson brought their water wagon,...
