Years ago, when I had just moved back to this area, I was having a rough time with things. We were forced to move abruptly and had to downsize quite a bit. I was looking for a job, and the work I had done previously required I wear a uniform of sorts.I didn't have much in the way of "respectable job candidate" attire. I was feeling lost and just happened to walk into this little clothing store along the main street in Superior. I didn't have much money and wondered why I had even bothered...
Writer’s block, ugh! I got it, and it is not good! I have been staring at this computer screen for hours, and the words just aren’t coming. I can almost feel my editor breathing down the back of my neck as my deadline is fast approaching. I sat down to write Saturday and nothing, Sunday was more of the same, and here I am Monday evening, with Tuesday morning fast approaching. I think there is just too much on my mind, and making light of that is not something I can do at this time. For months we have all watched the prices of literally everythi...

By Teraesa Bruce Well, it’s been another mess of a week. Nicholas, the youngest of our two Omaha boys, was here this weekend. We finished his room just in the nick of time. George and Jacob brought his bed in and set it up just an hour before I arrived home with him. We had a good visit, and my sister-in-law and youngest nephew were down Saturday, and the two boys got along well. In the past, our relationship with Nickolas has been difficult. He went through a phase where he didn’t want to come to visit, and there were a few visits where he...
I don’t know where to start. It’s been a tough week. Two of my friends are sick and were hospitalized, the pick-up broke down, and I hit a deer. On top of all that, I haven’t been feeling tippy-top. No worries, I’m not contagious or anything, just my usual health issues. I’ll be back to my good ol’ snarky, sarcastic self in a day or two. My mom had surgery on Friday to remove the plate from her knee. About five years ago, she fell and broke her knee. The added hardware was causing discomfort and keeping her from using the leg normally. T...
Wow, 2022, that’s going take a minute to get used to, I’ll be writing 2021 on everything until at least March. George installed the washer and dryer on Friday, and I’ve been doing laundry ever since. I am slowly but surely getting things unpacked and finding new homes for all our belongings, and we still can’t find anything. At least this week, I found the charger for my laptop computer! Last week, I was on a wild goose chase for about an hour trying to find it. I had given up and was headed to Superior in hopes The Express would have a spare w...
First off, I need to apologize. A couple of weeks ago, my column was a repeat of the week before, which caused some disappointment for those of you who read it. Last week it was overlooked, or there simply wasn’t room in the paper for it, so it did not run. I’m sorry. I looked over and over that paper from a few weeks ago and could have sworn it wasn’t there, so I told them to run it. Cheryl was right. I do need a break! Every week things seem to get crazier and crazier. Most of the time, I’m questioning whether or not I did the “this o...
New year's resolutions are big for many people. I don't understand it, but the new year does seem like a good excuse for a fresh start. I often wonder how many of those well-intended resolutions fail, as all of mine have, and maybe that's the reason I don't make them. Many new year's resolutions have something to do with losing weight, getting in shape, or being in better health for the years to come. In fact, business booms for fitness centers and gyms during the first three months of the...
Other than the fun of Halloween, Christmas has to be one of my favorite times of the year. I love the decorations, the lights, the carols, the tree, the excitement and the food. I will never know why anyone waits until Christmas to make fudge and peanut brittle. Tradition, I suppose. One of my favorite Christmas memories was caroling with my church family in Oak. Every year the congregation would get bundled up and climb onto a flatbed trailer covered in small straw bales to be chauffeured all over town singing Christmas hymns at home after...
I think I need a vacation. Today was like every other Monday, and it began with crawling out of bed, drinking coffee, and finishing up all I had started the week before to be emailed to The Express for publication. On Mondays, I pick up the mail for the paper and take it to the office in Superior. While in the office, I pick up the paychecks for Cheryl and me, go to the bank, the grocery store, and take care of other various errands. Driving back into town today, instead of turning to Cheryl’s to drop off her check, I drove back home. Once I p...
The Oxbow Motel has been around a long time. Many of us can not remember a time when it wasn't the first thing greeting people upon entering the city limits of Nelson from the north. As with all good things, its time as a motel will soon be ending. As of 11:59 p.m., on the night of December 31, the motel will become a family home. I visited with the owners, Vince and Teresa Walton, about the change . They told me about all the challenges facing them which, in the end, condemned the roadside...
Every year, thousands of people apply for a deer license with the hope of bagging a trophy buck and providing food for the family. Though I have never shot a deer, hunting season has been a big deal in my family. Almost more prominent than the holidays. My first-time deer hunt was my last! Waking up before the sun and sitting in the cold is not my idea of a good time. My experience with deer hunting comes after the deer has been shot and field-dressed. The processing of the meat is where I am...
It’s been another wild weekend of burning the candle at both ends. Friday morning, I left the house around nine to pick up my glasses from the eye doctor. After having my glasses fit, I hit the road headed to Sutton to have my back cracked by the bone crusher. Feeling an inch taller and not quite so compacted, I then headed to Lincoln to pick up moreitems for the Money Pit. I keep hearing we have a shortage of truckers here in the US, but I don’t see that out on the good ole interstate. The wind was blowing and every trailer on the road mus...
The majority of blood donors are unpaid volunteers who donate blood for a community supply. Many donate for several reasons. Despite the many reasons people donate, there are not enough potential donors to keep up with the need. Donating is relatively safe, but some donors may have bruising where the needle is inserted or may feel faint. Potential donors will be screened for things that might make their blood unsafe to use. This screening includes testing for diseases a blood transfusion can transmit. When donating blood, you must also answer...
When my husband and I first met Lowell Tuma, he had just bought the house at 250 West 1st Street in Nelson and said he planned to renovate and sell it. My husband and I were skeptical. That house was a mess, and not even I would have attempted it. We've met many people who have said the same thing about homes such as this one. They either covered up the problems or tucked tail and ran from them. Lowell said, "Taking on a 2,000 square foot home was a bit crazy on my part, but it's been a great ex...
It seems like everything I’ve tried to do this week has gone completely wrong. We had a water leak at the money pit, a valve to be exact. I wanted to replace it and couldn’t. Jacob tried, then George tried, and notta. We couldn’t get any leverage, so I cut the Pex and took the whole assembly to a couple of friends who put it in a clamp and made taking it apart look so easy! Jerks! LOL! After that, I put it all back together, lost the washers, didn’t get my fittings in tight enough, a complete disaster. To top it off, another water line I had j...
What a week! I feel like I have accomplished nothing! I’ve been running around like a chicken with my head cut off and making no progress with anything. Yesterday I had planned on getting the house cleaned up, and between work, errands, and my lack of organization, I managed to make a bigger mess of things. I found time to do my nails last night, which makes me feel ever so much better about my lot in life. It’s funny how something so simple as painting your nails or getting a haircut can make you feel so much better about yourself. No mat...
I have always dreamt of having a big old farmhouse like the one my dad grew up in on the hill near Oak. I’m not sure where I got my taste in architecture from, but I am obsessed with anything that predates 1900. The wrap-around porches, the ornate carvings, crown molding, and last but not least, hand-painted and velveteen wallpaper! So many people have no clue what I am talking about when I say velveteen wallpaper. Maybe I have the name wrong, but it had areas of raised velvet in the paper, so cool! When George and I met, I was living in my c...
I’m happy to say Jacob is good to go! Apparently, he has angered the nerves in his forearm, and the doctor told him it would stop hurting as soon as he quits using it as a battle-ax. He gets to wear an extra pad from now on when playing football. He used the last week planning for his future. Tuesday, he was allowed to ride along with the recruiter to his dad’s for his signature. Wednesday, we tried to remember every address we have ever had; I really should have kept a copy of what I gave to Robert’s recruiter. Then Thursday and Friday, he ha...
I'm sure by now most of you have heard about the Ambassadors of Kindness, a nonprofit group in Superior, which provides children in foster care with Christmas gifts through donations. Over the last few years, they have begun doing much more than just playing Santa to hundreds of children. Jaxon and Ellie Karnatz experienced life in the foster system firsthand and wanted to do something that would make the experience better for other children. With the help of their parents, Austin Karnatz and...
Well, Jacob is on the injured list again, not sure how severe. I’m going to have to start selling organs to be able to pay to fix his limbs! We are working away at the money pit. I’m starting to feel like that is going to be my story for the foreseeable future. I’ve started to patch and repair plaster. It’s not hard work, just tedious, and there is so much plaster to repair. The texturizing will be the hard part. George is getting ready to install the new furnace. He was working on the electrical, but we ran out of wire and light fixture...
As we head into the fall and winter months, charitable agencies are stepping up their requests for donations. Most are located in some far off city and we do not know those responsible for its operation. But that isn't true of one group. The Ambassadors of Kindness is a nonprofit group based in Superior. It provides children in foster care with Christmas gifts through donations. In recent years, the group has begun doing more than just playing Santa to hundreds of children. Jaxon and Ellie...
Last week was eventful! It was homecoming at the high school, so being the paper lady and a senior football mom had me running in circles. Thankfully the other senior mom, yep, there are only two of us this year, was on top of things. She organized everything. I was just required to show up. I offered to help several times, but she assured me she had it all under control. At first, I was a little taken aback by it, but she did an amazing job, and who am I to stand in the way. Besides, I’m better at the “moral support” and “go fetch and carry...
Most of us in Nuckolls County have heard of South Central Public Power District. Many of us get mail from them each month. What I'd wager is that you didn't know they've been around since the Stone Age! The stone ages of electricity in rural Nebraska, that is. The electrification of cities began as early as 1880, but for us country folk, it took much longer. Only 11 percent of U.S. farms had electricity in 1935. Thankfully that year, the Rural Electrification Administration was created by...
I am so frustrated! We ordered a new refrigerator and cook stove this spring. As with everything right now, there was a wait, which wasn’t a big deal to me at the time. Well, my appliances went to the shipper at the beginning of July and are still sitting waiting to be shipped. The shipper said things are “backed up” because of the WooFlu, and they are waiting on dates from dispatch. I ordered and received my furnace in the same month, so I’m having a bit of trouble understanding this. I filled out their online forms, set email inquire...
