    Chapter J met last Monday in the Salem Lutheran Church fellowship hall with Steph Thayer and Dana Epley serving as hostesses. Ruth Epley, vice-president, opened the meeting as President Sue VanSkiver was away attending the P.E.O. National Convention. The main business item was reviewing resumes and selecting a candidate to be recommended for a STAR National Scholarship. Plans for the continuation of the local scholarship were also discussed.     Thirteen was the lucky number of Rubies who motored to Blue Hill on Friday, Sept. 29, for lunch and to invade the local retail establishments. Following lunch at the local grocery and cafe, the group trooped next door to the Treasure Trove, where they were indeed able to find thrifty treasures. After visiting several other establishments, the group was ready to indulge in lattes, mochas, flavored coffee and other specialty items at the shop located on the other side of the grocery-cafe.     A general meeting of the Women of Salem Lutheran Church was held on Sept. 20 in the church fellowship hall. The 2024 officers of the group were elected and will be installed at the Jan. 3 Epiphany Supper. They are: DeAnna Tuttle, president; Lexie Frahm, vice president; Murlene Schleufer, secretary, and Diane Gebers, treasurer. Committee members will be announced at the January meeting.     Chuck and DeAnna Tuttle attended the American Legion District 10 Fall Rally held at the Sutton Legion Hall on Saturday, Sept. 16. DeAnna led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem and Chuck gave the recitation of the POW/MIA Empty Chair ceremony.     P. E. O. Chapter J met in the Salem Lutheran Church fellowship hall on Monday, Sept. 11, with Carol Eckles and Jaynie Spirk serving as co-hostesses. President Sue VanSkiver reviewed the by-law changes that will be voted on at the national convention she will be attending later this month.     The regular monthly meetings of the Nelson American Legion Post 187 Family was held Thursday at the Legion Clubhouse. The deaths of Legion member Don Biltoft and of the wife of member Erik Russell were announced and special condolences extended to the families.     Throughout history, Elizabeth (Betsy) Griscom Ross has been credited with sewing the first American flag and with helping George Washington finish the red, white and blue design. It is believed that Betsy was chosen to complete this task because George Ross, an uncle of her deceased husband John (the first of her three husbands), was a flag committee member.     Dick and Marge Kohmetscher of Lawrence were awarded Quilts of Valor in a moving presentation during the Lawrence-Nelson High School program honoring veterans held on November 10. The five girls who designed and constructed the quilts under the supervision of Kay Theer, their 4-H leader, voted unanimously to award a quilt to Army Veteran Dick Kohmetscher in recognition of his service to God, country, community and family.
