Cassidy Huston and Madalyn Kennedy, Lawrence-Nelson, high school seniors, mentored the eighth grade students Monday the twenty fifth through a Career Quest program. The two planned and conducted a mock trial in the Nuckolls County Courtroom involving the 8th grade students. It was based on "The Outsiders," a movie from the 1983. Jessica Stokes, Career Quest instructor, oversaw the project. As part of the Career Quest program juniors and seniors job shadow area businesses. Both Huston and...
Five members of the Mankato Garden Club gathered Saturday to decorate 24 pots for Christmas in Mankato. Marlene Brown was the first member to arrive and swiftly organized the members arriving so each person could uniquely decorate the pots with artificial Christmas tree branches, seasonal ribbons, acorns painted white and nice bold touches like lollipop shapes. Some pots were on the sidewalk in front of various businesses on Commercial or Main Street, and others were at locations including the...
Ismael Rodriguez, a 44-year-old known around Jewell County as Mae, worked with the Jewell County Health 365 Coalition to create an uplifting mural that can be seen on the south side of the Rural Health Department building just off Highway 36 in Mankato. The mural took Rodriguez approximately two weeks to complete because of rainy weather. As the middle child of five children, three brothers and a sister, Rodriguez was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. His family is artistic and worked in...

Earlier this fall, The Express published a story about the uncertainty of Candy Cane Lane. Because of the death of several of the popular attraction’s dedicated volunteers and health problems experienced by others, the continued existence was in doubt. But additional volunteers stepped up. Be assured the holiday season feature will open on schedule tomorrow (Friday) night. Thanks to favorable weather, and the hard work and dedication of many civic minded volunteers living in Superior and the surrounding area, Candy Cane Lane will once again...

Editor: I want to start with an apology. I am sorry we didn’t get to say goodbye. I want everyone to know how much I have appreciated being part of your lives. It was such an honor to bring you the evening news for all these years. I arrived in Nebraska in 1997 as a 23-year-old with short blonde hair, excited about her first big anchor job. Thank you for welcoming me into your homes from the beginning. Not for one moment do I take that for granted. I consider myself so fortunate to have had a career I thoroughly enjoyed. I was going to say...
The old Superior roller skating rink south of the Burlington Railroad tracks was a wood frame building with tar paper exterior and a series of windows that could be propped open during warm weather to ventilate the rink. To make the experience more pleasant, music from a phonograph was broadcast over loud speakers to cover up the rumble of the skates. During warm weather with the wind from the south, I could lie in bed at 1127 Kansas Street and be serenaded by the skating rink music. During the winter months, the windows on the rink were...
Q: Does a person have to go to church to be saved? A: There are multiple scriptures throughout the Bible that tell us there is only one requirement for receiving forgiveness of sins and everlasting life as a free gift; believing in Jesus Christ. (John 3:18; Acts 16:30-31; Romans 4:5; Eph. 2:8-9). That being said, salvation is more than a ‘get-out-of-hell-free’ card, it is a life-changing experience that serves as the beginning of a whole new life. If we have genuinely placed our faith in Christ, we should have a desire to get baptized,...
There are many things to be thankful for this week. Some are major and often recalled but there are minor items we tend to overlook. For example, this week I was reminded to be thankful turn signals are now standard equipment on motor vehicles. I even have turn signals on my three-wheeled electric bike. But turn signals have not always been available. My first automobile didn’t have the signals. If I wanted to make a left turn I was to roll down the window and extend my arm straight out. For right turn I was to raise my arm along side the...
Whoever would have thought that we would have four bathrooms in our new town house! We, who grew up with a 2-holer and a path in the backyard. Some folks mention corn cobs, but we were rich enough to always have a Sears Roebuck catalog on hand. Many tales have been told about such privies. It was especially a hardship in the cold dark nights of winter. One year of heavy snowdrifts, our little boys dug a tunnel through the snow to the outhouse. What an adventure for them! (This was our first month after moving home from four years of city...
Memories . . . What do 1962 and 2024 have in common ? ? ? Both years saw the Nebraska Husker Football Team break out of losing seasons and both seasons earned the team a Bowl game. In 1962, Bob Devaney and team took the same team the former coach had and earned a winning record for the season and then played against Joe Namath in the Gotham Bowl in New York City. In 2024 Matt Rhule earned six wins (at this point in the season) which did two things: earned a possible Bowl game and also gave the team the chance to end a period of losing...
With the death of Marty Pohlman last Wednesday morning, The Express lost a valued staff member of more than 13 years. As we were cleaning out his desk, we found the following story about the Superior Cattle Company, an important business in the early years of the community. It is appropriate to publish this week as a story in last week’s paper about a Civilian Conservation Corps dam being rebuilt on the former ranch property brought inquires to The Express about the cattle company. Reviewing the story Marty was writing raised questions...

So they parted company and she went to college in Lincoln and he moved to Dallas, Texas. As a boy in Hastings, his grandparents lived...
